FIFA released the list of 12 referees that have been asked to remain at the World Cup. England's Graham Poll and Russia's Valentin Ivanov, along with other seven were dismised after being involved in highly controversial matches. The 12 referees will continue along with their regular assistants.
Quarter-final referee assignments:
Italy - Ukraine (Frank de Bleeckere) England - Portugal (Horacio Elizondo) Brazil - France (Luis Medina Cantalejo) Germany - Argentina (Lubos Michel)
The 31-year-old Manchester United defender will return for Saturday's quarter-final against Portugal in Gelsenkirchen. Neville has played only in the 1-0 Group B win over Paraguay after which he suffered a calf injury. He returned to World Cup training on Wednesday and he's expected to add more strength to the team as he is an experienced player
Italy's defender Alessandro Nesta missed the 1-0 win over Australia because of a groin injury picked up in the game against the Czech Republic. He admitted that he has no chance to play in Friday's World Cup quarter-final against Ukraine, but hopes to be fit enough to play in the semi-final. His replacement Marco Materazzi will miss the quarter-final due to suspension and Palermo's defender Andrea Barzagli almost certainly will partner Fabio Cannavaro in the centre of defence.
France will meet Brazil in the quarter-finals on Saturday after a deserved 3-1 win over Spain in the World Cup second round with goals from Frank Ribery, Patrick Vieira and Zinedine Zidane. It was another disapointing exit for Spain despite them having one of the best teams in the World Cup, proving that they cannot win a big match. Zidane's career goes on, at least until the next game against Brazil.
Brazil are through to the quarter finals after a 3-0 win over Ghana in Dortmund. Ronaldo became the highest scorer in World Cup history with a record of 15 goals at the finals, breaking Gerd Muller's record of 14. It was his third goal in two games. Adriano doubled the advantage in 45th minute and Ze Roberto made it three in the 84th. Brazil will face either Spain or France in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
Ukraine are through to the quarter finals with a 3-0 penalty shootout victory over Switzerland after a goalless draw in Cologne. Penalties proved to be a disaster for the Swiss who failed to score a single time. Jakob Kuhn's team was eliminated without conceding a single goal in the entire tournament. Ukraine will face Italy in the last eight.
Italy is through to the quarter-finals after a dramatic 1-0 victory over Australia. Substitute Francesco Totti scored an injury-time penalty after the Spanish referee Luis Medina Cantalejo pointed to the spot. The penalty should not have been awarded as Grosso had deliberately fallen over Neill's challenge but the referee had no hesitation and sent the Socceroos back home. Italy will face Ukraine in the last eight phase.
Portugal will face England in the last eight on June 1st, after a dramatic 1-0 win over Holland. The game was settled by Maniche's first-half strike in the 23 minute, after he side-stepped the challenges of Andre Ooijer and Khalid Boulahrouz and smashed the ball into the net. It was probably the only good moment of this game that produced a total of 16 bookings, and had four players sent off. Portugal are into the quarter-finals for only the second time in their history.
Philippe Senderos, one of Kobi Kuhn's most important players will miss the rest of the World Cup after he suffered a dislocated shoulder and a broken nose in the 2-0 win over South Korea. He will be replaced by Arsenal teammate Johan Djourou. Switzerland team doctor said: "He should be able to play again in five or six weeks if there are no additional problems."
Argentina will face Germany in the quarter-finals, after a dramatic 2-1 win over Mexico in Leipzig. Captain Rafael Márquez scored the opener in the sixth minute and Chelsea's player Crespo beat Borgetti four minutes later to levelled the score line. Argentina were forced into extra time by Mexico, but the Atletico Madrid midfielder Maxi Rodriguez sealed the victory with a superb 98th minute volley.
